Child Custody Evaluations: Child custody evaluations are performed through appointment by the Family Court. The primary purpose of a custody evaluation is to investigate the family and provide useful information to the court. A parenting plan in the best interests of the children is created as a product of the evaluation. A thorough and well constructed parenting plan helps most families avoid the destructive consequences of a trial.

Ethical, competent custody evaluators are knowledgeable about professional standards. Here are three excellent resources that should allow attorneys and mental health professionals to understand the basic parameters for providing child custody evaluations for the courts.
