Group Therapy FAQ: Why send your clients to group therapy? Why Newsom Psychological ? What Groups are Available? How do I refer a client to group therapy at Newsom Psychological?
Why send your clients to group therapy? DFPS Policy (RFP-2006-060-04-CPS): “To make more efficient use of Regional allocations, it is expected that those clients who can benefit from group therapy should receive most of their treatment in a group setting, where possible.” Group therapy provides benefits for clients that cannot be attained in any other type of treatment. Parents who enter the CPS system for the first time are in shock and express it as anger and denial. Participation in a support group quickly changes this response to hope and positive action. Being in groups of parents with similar issues helps the parent know they are not alone and it allows them to process their own issues in a less threatening manner. Parents are able to benefit the experience of other parents in the group who are farther along in the process. Parents are often dealing with intense underlying shame. They begin to overcome this debilitating state by helping others while helping themselves. Isolated parents benefit from the structured social setting to develop appropriate modes of expression, socializing techniques and insight while their experiences are “normalized” through sharing their difficulties with others. Parents learn new parenting techniques in a supportive, interactive environment where they focus on applying those techniques that are most appropriate for their situation. Therapy groups require more active participation than educational groups, and the learning that takes place is less likely to be lost. Clients cannot hide in the back and just get credit for attendance. Experience - Dr. Newsom has many years of experience as a service provider and as an evaluation and treatment contractor in Region 6. Our groups are designed specifically for parents who have become involved in the DFPS system and they focus on issues that are most problematic for these parents. Expertise - We have many experienced clinicians providing services. Most providers have taught parenting education, anger management or other classes as well as serving families as clinicians. Convenience - Newsom Psychological has multiple convenient locations in Harris County and Galveston County. We take referrals 24 hours per day via fax at (713) 533-9915. Availability - No waiting lists. We have adequate providers to take referrals now. Clients may join these groups at any time. Parent Power – The groups are for parents with difficult or challenging children. Children with acting out problems, illnesses, developmental disabilities, serious mental illness can be difficult for even the best parents. This group provides ongoing support and parent education for caregivers who have challenging children. Parents are supported while they practice and implement behavioral techniques to improve communication, compliance and conflict reduction. Peaceful Parent Groups – These groups are for parents with Anger/Violence/Verbal Abuse problems. I’ll be blunt. A six or eight-week anger management education class doesn’t finish the job. Parents have to be able to put the concepts into practice and there has to be some sort of accountability. There is no better way to do that than in an ongoing anger process group. This group combines education with process and parents don’t finish until they demonstrate change. Parent Support – Some parents who are involved in the CPS system hit the ground running. Others have difficulties coping with multiple demands and they don’t navigate the system effectively. Parent support groups help parents focus on being positively engaged in activities that will help them be successful parents. Relapse Prevention – For parents who completed substance dependency treatment and require ongoing support and monitoring. Substance dependency is the most frequent underlying factor in child neglect. It is also the most common factor when parents receive additional reports after completing services. These groups help parents avoid relapse and provide for early detection of relapse. Parents with Serious Mental Illness – Failure to comply with medical management and other treatment prescriptions are a major source of parent dysfunction among parents with depression, bipolar disorder and psychotic illness.
