Referrals

Referral: The referral is the most important aspect of the psychological evaluation and treatment process that the caseworker can control. DFPS does not contract with Evaluation and Treatment providers to do social studies or home studies. Nevertheless, professional standards require mental health professionals who work in child protection to be fully aware of case details that can only be obtained in the field. Professional standards require information from collaterals as well as a full understanding of the background and legal status of the case. Failing to provide full information is a leading cause of conflict between mental health professionals and caseworkers. Because we are not contracted to investigate and generate the type of information required for us to do our work up to the required professional standards, we depend on the caseworker to provide the information. This team approach has many benefits compared to the model where one person does all the work. The more information you provide, the more likely it is that the services we provide will be helpful. We cannot evaluate or treat a problem that has not been identified, nor can we know what detail may prove to be important until we review the case materials. In our experience, there are case documents that contain the information we need. This does not require any additional work on your part other that copying the information and sending it along with your referral. These are the documents to include:

Case Narrative: Include the call narrative and the summaries of collateral contacts.

Affidavits: If there has been an affidavit generated, please include this.

Previous Psychological/Psychiatric Evaluations: All of them

Permanency Plan: Most recent.

Other: Police Reports, Risk assessments, Family Evaluations, CPS records from previous cases, Prior treatment summaries, etc.

Referral form: Use the standard DFPS referral form.

2054s - A valid 2054 is required prior to any service provision. Choose Newsom Psychological as the provider for all services, input the required number of units, sign it and have it approved by your  supervisor before sending it to us at (713) 533-9915 (fax) . 2054s must cover at least six months of service.
